2:00pm - 6:00pm Art in Vodou / Vodou in Art: The Sacred Roots of Haitian Art
"Specifically, the flags are personal artisic statements: drawings made up of swquins, beads fabric and color. The artist's task is to identify the spirit with veve drawings, this is, with mystical symbols understood by the Vodou participants to represant a certain loa (spirit) or group of loa. On the one hand, the veve symbols are inherent in th Vodou brought to Haiti from Africa during the time of the slave trade. On the other hand, they have been combined, overtime, with nationalisitc symbols, Christian images, and even Masonic emblems. As the symbols have mereged and transformed, they have become assimilated into Haitian culture." - Virgil Young
