There is a parking lot at the rear of the church, off Maury Avenue if coming from Colley, or Baldwin Avenue if coming from Hampton Boulevard (these side streets are one-way.) The church is just down the street from the NARO Theater.  Enter at the back of the church, from the parking lot.

Please bring a separate pair of soft-soled non-street shoes in which to dance.  We must take extra care not to scratch or otherwise damage the floor.

FROM RICHMOND AND THE PENINSULA

1. Take I-664 South through the Monitor/Merrimac Bridge-Tunnel.
2. Take Exit 9 and merge onto VA-164 East toward Portsmouth.
3. After crossing the long West Norfolk bridge, stay in left lane and take US-58 East (Midtown Tunnel).
4. After going through the Midtown tunnel, bear left onto Hampton Boulevard (VA-337 East).
5. Turn right onto Princess Anne Road.
6. Turn left onto Colley Avenue.
7. The church is on the left, at the corner of Maury and Colley Aves.
8. Turn left onto Maury Avenue to access the parking lot in the rear.

FROM THE INTERCHANGE (I64/I-264 IN NORFOLK/VIRGINIA BEACH)

1. Take I-264 West toward Norfolk.
2. Take Exit 10, City Hall Avenue
3. Stay straight to go onto E. City Hall Avenue.
4. Turn right onto St. Pauls Boulevard. St. Pauls Boulevard becomes Monticello Avenue.
5. Turn left onto Princess Anne Road.

These will be Irish traditional music sessions the one constant is that it's nearly all Irish music in the traditional Irish style. On the 1st, 3rd, and those occasional 5th Mondays (odd weeks), we'll play at an intermediate to fast tempo. Anyone who knows the music is welcome. The 2nd and 4th Mondays (even weeks) will be "slow session" time for beginner and intermediate players, as well as any experienced players wanting to slow down and work on technique.

Your host Josh says, I play all forms of American traditional and novelty music, focusing on the stringband tradition of the 1920s-50s, early bluegrass, jugband music, and all things banjo-related. I shy away from the ultra clean sounds of modern recordings, but they will occasionally make their way into the playlist. I tend, however, to favor rawer, grittier sounds. The show is sometimes themed and sometimes merely a smorgasbord of plinks and plunks.

There you have it! The WRIR broadcast signal may not reach all of the Richmond listening area, but its worth a try on Tuesday evenings and their MP3 audio stream works just fine, thank you.

Most of all, contra dance is fun! Thousands have been contra dancing for hundreds of years. With a little courage and a sense of adventure, you too can enjoy this traditional social activity. You do not need to know how to dance or bring a partner. All dances are taught and prompted by a caller with a live band playing lively traditional jigs and reels. Learn more about contra dancing here.

You become part of a living tradition passed on by experienced dancers helping newcomers. The dancers, the musicians, and caller aim for an evening of low-pressure and often energetic camaraderie. Come alone or with others. We suggest changing partners every dance, although dates who attend together and significant others might dance with each other more than once. Sometimes you choose a partner and sometimes you get chosen. It's acceptable for women to ask men to dance.

Contra dancing is an evening of fun, featuring dancing in "sets" of about a dozen couples. You interact with your partner and everyone else in the set, dancing with easy walking steps to energetic music. A caller works with live musicians to guide dancers through a variety of dances. The caller teaches each dance before it is actually performed to music. This walk-through helps you know what to expect so movements can be easily done. The caller calls the dances as they are being performed to the music, so dancers are able to make each movement in time with the music. When dancers appear to have mastered a dance, the caller may stop calling, leaving the dancers to enjoy the movement with music alone.

The inaugural jam convened on Thursday, August 7. Its original announcement says that the focus will be on Appalachian old time and closely related traditional music. Jammers will stick with traditional and public domain music. Over the course of the evening, different "lead" fiddlers will pick and start the tunes and songs. The Good Cherry is a new establishment and the folks at the Good Cherry are excited about the jam. Check out their web site for photos, a great coffee slideshow, coffee and food menus, and other information. They will provide complementary house coffee or tea for musicians, and you can (of course!) purchase their specialty drinks, food, and deserts.

Heidi's Ground Rules: Karen and I want a format that welcomes all levels of players. We invite 'sheet-music-trained' musicians to bring their stands and whatever Celtic music they want to play. We intend to pace most tunes to let the newcomers have a chance at learning them, to some degree, whether by reading or by ear. By all means, though, there will definitely be a time when we let the horse hair fly! The only stipulation Kathy and I have is that we want to keep this Celtic. I'm hoping some of the Rosie Connelly group will stop in and help me provide some leadership. Some of my friends love Celtic music, want to join us, but don't know any tunes. I hope the real musicians will accept the idea of some folks reading the tunes; I and many others just don't have time to learn tunes any other way.
