She is on her way to becoming a miserly, miserable, tight-fisted hand to the grindstone, until one Christmas season she is taken on a journey by Madge, the lunch lady (covered in chains and pots and pans) and the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future.
Nov 23 - Museum Mates

The Columbia River Maritime Museum is pleased to offer Museum Mates again this fall, an activity-based program designed especially for three, four and five year olds. The Museum invites families with young children to spend an hour with education staff, from 9:30 to 10:30 Monday mornings, exploring topics related to the Columbia River and maritime world through stories, songs, exhibit hunts and hand-made crafts.

Each week will focus on a different theme that leads children and their family member on a voyage of discovery through the Museum. As this program is designed to include both the adult and child, preschoolers must be accompanied by an adult. Each program will include rich and colorful stories. Through active participation and hands-on activities, child and parent will immerse themselves in learning. Making a boat, taking part in buoyancy experiments, acting out stories with puppets, painting a “masterpiece”, and going on a treasure hunt are just a few of the engaging activities provided during Museum Mates programs.

Museum Mates begins Monday, October 5th at 9:30 A.M. and is offered every Monday through the end of April. This program is free with paid admission. Members are always free. Call Betsey Ellerbroek, Education Director, at the Museum for more information.

Nov 26 - Climate Change Presentation

New Date!! Rising sea levels, more frequent and more intense storms, higher waves and storm surges – these are just a few changes that are predicted as a result of climate change. Join us on Wednesday, November 25 at 7pm for “Climate Change and the North Coast – Creating Resilient Ecosystems and Communities”. This is the second program in the series Listening to the Land, sponsored by the Necanicum Watershed Council and the North Coast Land Conservancy. Pat Corcoran, a hazards outreach specialist with the Oregon Sea Grant Extension program, lives in Astoria and works coast wide helping local people apply university research to increase their resilience to coastal natural hazards. Pat will provide a presentation on the drivers of climate change and the expected impacts of that change on the Oregon coast. The group will then highlight areas in the watershed that may be vulnerable to climate change and identify activities that can be undertaken to reduce impacts and increase the resilience of the ecosystems and people of the watershed. Particular attention will be paid to activities that both improve ecosystem health, and increase its resilience to extreme events. Listening to the Land is a series of evening presentations and related outdoor excursions that highlight our amazing coastal ecosystem. Presentations take place on the third Wednesday of the month from October through April at the Seaside Library, located at 1131 Broadway in Seaside. (No program will happen in December.) These programs are free of charge. The Necanicum Watershed Council is a group of community stakeholders and volunteers working together to ensure the health of the Necanicum Watershed ecosystem. North Coast Land Conservancy has worked since 1986 to serve as a resource for Northwest coastal communities and landowners to conserve and protect land in perpetuity for its ecological, passive recreational and cultural values.
Nov 28 - Wildlife and Oil Spills

An oil spill occurs someplace in the world every day from a variety of sources. What happens to the wildlife caught in these spills? The Columbia River Maritime Museum invites you to hear Curt Clumpner, northwest regional representative with the International Bird Rescue and Research Center, on Saturday, November 28th at 2:30 P.M. address this question and others. Most of us are aware of the unusual sea slime that harmed thousands of birds on the Long Beach peninsula in October. Curt participated in the early stages of that rescue.
Did you know that a dime-size glob of oil could kill a bird? We may learn about the devastating effects of spills that occur when tankers accidentally lose their cargo, but there are thousands of small spills occurring daily around the world that go unreported and unnoticed. Millions of water birds die every year due to oil from jet skis and motorboats, to oil washed off streets and into storm drains after rain. Clumpner will review his involvement with different oil spills and wildlife in the Pacific Northwest and beyond over the last 25 years. His experiences range from responding when the barge Nestucca collided with a tugboat near Grays Harbor and spilled more than 231,000 gallons of bunker fuel to overseeing the search and collection efforts for the bird rehabilitation program during the New Carissa disaster. Some of the challenges of rescuing oiled wildlife will be highlighted as well as ideas on how people might get involved if such a disaster occurs where they live.
Curt Clumpner is the founder and former director of HOWL Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Lynnwood, Washington. He volunteered for the International Bird Rescue and Research Center beginning in 1985 and joined the IBRRC staff in 1995. He has responded to many oil spills over the years traveling to a variety of countries including France, Tasmania, South Africa and Argentina.
The Columbia River Maritime Museum is located at 1792 Marine Drive in Astoria, Oregon. The museum offers exhibits pertaining to the maritime heritage of the Pacific Northwest. Climb aboard the National Historic Landmark Lightship Columbia, listen to shipwreck survivor stories, watch Bar Pilots board container ships, learn to read signal flags, and shop in the Museum Store. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. Admission $5 - $ 10. 503-325-2323 www.crmm.org

Dec 14 - Museum Mates
