The Haul Road

The road heading north from Fairbanks to the Arctic Ocean is officially called the Dalton Highway, locally called the "Haul Road". This road, mostly dirt, was used during the construction of the oil pipeline and is still used today for moving equipment and goods to and from the North Slope.

This road also provides access to some of the most remote areas of the state, including the beautiful Brooks Range.

Photos from the Haul Road

The Haul Road is quite a haul. The 414 miles is mostly on a well-graded dirt road. Gasoline is only available at Yukon River, Coldfoot, and Deadhorse, but there's no shortage of beautiful scenery.
Most of the road is North of the Arctic Circle.
The road and pipeline run parallel as they snake northward. The weather can be challenging.
There are few communities along the road. Wiseman, an old mining town, is perhaps the largest with a popuplation of 21.
Atigun Pass takes you up and over the Brooks Range. Trucks have the right of way in this part of the country.
North of Atigun Pass you find the large tundra expanse. Caribou country.

The snow melts quickly in the warmth of the day.
