Apr 1 Mon
This event runs from Friday, March 1, 2019 at 7:30pm through Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 9:30pm.

Description:
Leonard Cohen is Dead -- Crime is acceptable and dead singers lead the world. Physical, explosive and with the mania of a Richard Foreman wild universe, Jerry Mouawad's newest original mash-up takes influences from Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, Jean Genet’s Splendid's and sci-fi horror. (This play has nothing to do with the real Leonard Cohen.)

To Fly Again -- Mad Max, Ionesco and Beckett are inspirations for Mouawad’s desert playground where "there is nothing to be done." A revival of last spring’s smash hit, four dancers and a roaming percussionist clash and collide with a clan of four clowns (à la Marx Brothers) in a beautiful, yet barren, landscape.

Pebble -- Creator of The Reunion, The Dinner and Fallout, Carol Triffle puts up her latest work Pebble—a world where a brother interrogates his sister in a mysterious who-not-done-it and she leaves him with only “I’ll tell you later, kid.”

Rose City Antifa presents:

Challenging the Both Sides Narrative: Difference Between Fascist & Antifa Movements in the Trump Era with Dr. Stanislav Vysotsky

The campaign and election of Donald Trump to the presidency brought a number of movements into the public consciousness. Among them were various factions of the extreme right-wing of American politics. White supremacists and other bigots associated with the "alt right" saw Trump's candidacy as an opportunity to spread their message to a wider audience. Antifascist groups mobilized in response to these public displays of fascism, which brought these conflicts out of the underground and into the streets. This talk will provide an overview of contemporary fascist and antifascist movements with a focus on the key differences between them.

Stanislav Vysotsky, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. His research on the militant antifascist movement and the relationship between threat, space, subculture, and social movement activism has been published in journals such as Interface: A Journal for and about Social Movements, Critical Criminology, and the book Inside Antifa: The Tactics, Culture, and Practice of Militant Antifascism (forthcoming, Routledge). He has also published research on fascist and supremacist movements in the Journal of Political and Military Sociology, Journal of Crime and Justice, Journal of Hate Studies, as well as several edited volumes. His current research is focused on analyzing the dynamics between protesters, counter-protesters, and police at fascist rallies.

"Priced Out is an investigative and personal look at how skyrocketing housing prices are displacing Portland's black community and reshaping the entire city. The feature-length documentary explores the complexities and contradictions of gentrification and what neighborhood life means after the era of "The Ghetto." The film is a sequel to the 2002 documentary NorthEast Passage: The Inner City and the American Dream.
Priced Out premiered locally on Nov. 1 2017, at the Northwest Filmmaker's Festival. Since it debuted the film has screened cities from Los Angeles to Boston.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers and local social activists.

Made possible by The National Endowment for the Humanities Fund of The Library Foundation.

Join JCWC and the City of Gresham for a fun and important day of plant care! We’ll be meeting at Liberty Ave (AKA Ochioto) site to mulch many new plantings and remove invasive species around them that hinder biodiversity.

WHY: Mulching provides many benefits to new plantings. Aside from helping with weed control, mulch retains water in the soil around new plantings and contributes to soil health. Oftentimes, precious mycelium (AKA fungi) develops in the barkdust and other organic material used to mulch. To the human eye, mycelium looks like a network of white web-like material and the mushrooms we see are actually more like blossoms that emerge from the vegetative mycelium below. It helps break everything down into new fresh soil, and even acts as a vast web of communication between trees and other plants that lie beneath the ground surface.

Please RSVP today so we know how many people to expect!

Many thanks to our generous volunteer program funders The Mintkeski Family Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation for making this day possible!
