15 July 2019 - 14 August 2019
Jul 15 Mon

It's been 140 days since the Mayor and City Council members expressed opposition to Zenith Energy’s plan to make Portland a hub for tar sands oil. Throughout that time, many of us have been urging the City Council to—at the very least!—hold a public forum to inform our community about this dangerous project.

Just yesterday, the City announced that this long-awaited forum will occur this coming Monday, July 15.

This is the moment we have been waiting for. We need you to join us, Friend, to make our collective voices loud and clear: no tar sands in Portland, or anywhere.

What: Portland City Council Forum on Zenith Energy

When: Monday, July 15th, 2019. 6:30 - 8:30 PM.

** New Location! ** University of Portland - Buckley Center (5000 N Willamette Blvd).

RSVP: On Facebook

Please wear red.

With this short notice, we're doing everything we can to make sure as many people as possible can attend to learn more and show the vast strength of our movement. But we could use your help. Can you forward this email to 5 of your friends and invite them to join us on Monday?

This listening session is the first formal opportunity to publicly share your concerns with City Council, demand a denial of all permits for Zenith Energy, and help stop dangerous crude-oil-by-rail in our communities.

Since learning of Zenith’s new tar sands business, thousands of Portlanders have taken action by coming to community forums, calling and emailing City Council, gathering hundreds of petition signatures to the City, educating our neighborhoods, and even taking direct action at the facility itself. Now, we need to keep the pressure on and show the Portland City Council that there is no room for tar sands in our city.

Monday is the day we've been waiting for. Join us to share your opposition to Zenith Energy and dirty tar sands oil in our city.

I'll see you there,

Dineen O'Rourke, Campaign & Action Organizer

P.S. — Here's some background on Zenith Energy: In December 2017, Zenith Energy bought an old asphalt and crude oil terminal located in NW Portland. Within months of purchasing the terminal, Zenith Energy began importing tar sands crude oil by rail from Canada, storing the oil at the terminal in NW Portland, and loading it onto tankers with destinations including China, South Korea, and California. Not only is Zenith using old infrastructure permitted to transport asphalt in order to move tar sands crude oil through Portland, they are using permits filed by the terminals former owner in 2014 to expand the facility. If new construction is completed, Zenith will achieve a four-fold increase in railcar unloading capability, potentially increasing the number of oil trains passing through Portland each week. Tar sands is known as the most polluting form of energy on the planet. By allowing Zenith's expansion to occur, not only is the City complicit in the burning of this dirty, polluting fuel and exacerbating the climate crisis, but they are putting our communities at direct risk of a possible train derailment. This must end. I'll see you on Monday.

2019 ACTION NIGHTS series: where we'll be joining together every other week in community to take meaningful and strategic action together. From January to June, when the 2019 Oregon Legislature is in session, many Action Nights will be centered upon what's happening in the Capitol, with opportunities to hear direct reports from our Conservation Director and Lobbyist, and hold our elected officials accountable to the people who got them elected. Action Nights will be all about praxis: we'll be learning and growing our organizing skills, then we'll immediately put our new skills to use around a current issue happening in the session.
