Party Workshop 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM | Propaganda Party- Community Defense: Eclipse Edition
Propaganda Parties are events where artists and organizers gather to hang out and distribute free material (posters, prints, stickers, flyers, banners, anything), to socialize and to imagine better ways to link art and movements. Live screenprinting of slogans, images, graphics and designs reflecting political and social themes is part of the party too. The third Portland Propaganda Party will take place in the Paragon Gallery at PCC Cascade Campus, 815 North Killingsworth, from 5-9 pm on Friday August 18th. The theme of this event is Community Defense. In the aftermath of the violence and alienation of the past several months, we want to create a context where people can consider what it means to defend communities. Tell your friends, your colleagues and your comrades to come hang out, pick up some art, and help us figure out how to use art to help movements do the work that needs to be done. These events are put together by a group of Portland artists and organizers who work in a variety of movements, and using a variety of tactics. We have in common a belief that visual art can shift consciousness and bring people together, and we want to use that power to uplift communities and help them feel strong enough to defend themselves in the current climate. One consequence of these attacks is that families today are facing a world shaped by diminishing employment opportunities, ever more precarious working conditions, deteriorating social services and growing social divisions. Historically, faith leaders and faith communities have played vital roles in important social movements. The same is true today. Pope Francis has called inequality “the root of social evil” and consistently defends workers against a profit-first mentality. Other faith traditions also have strong roots in justice for workers and the rights of families to just living conditions. Why do unions matter? Why do unions and social justice matter to people of faith? What can faith leaders and faith communities do to help strengthen local labor and social justice movements? In Locking Up Our Own (Farrar, Straus and Giroux), Yale legal scholar James Forman Jr. weighs the tragic role that some African Americans themselves played in escalating the war on crime. As Forman shows, the first substantial cohort of black mayors, judges, and police chiefs took office around the country amid a surge in crime. Drawing on his experience as a public defender, Forman writes with compassion for individuals trapped in terrible dilemmas. In 1883, railroad financier Henry Villard brought Portland and the Pacific Northwest their first transcontinental railroad. Earning a reputation for boldness on Wall Street, the war correspondent turned entrepreneur set out to establish Portland as a bourgeoning metropolis. To realize his vision, he hired architects McKim, Mead & White to design a massive passenger station and a first-class hotel. Despite financial panics, lost fortunes, and stalled construction, the Portland Hotel opened in 1890 and remained the social heart of the city for 60 years. While the original station was never built, Villard returned as a pivotal benefactor of Union Station, saving its iconic clock tower in the process. In Railway Palaces of Portland, Oregon (History Press), author Alexander Benjamin Craghead tells the story of this Gilded Age patron and the architecture that helped shape the city's identity. | |||||||||||

This was the culmination of a massive, peaceful civil rights movement by women that had its formal beginnings in 1848 at the world’s first women’s rights convention, in Seneca Falls, New York. In a meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Kelly told Members of Congress that the fate of the DACA and TPS programs were in the hands of white nationalist Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Right wing state politicians have given the Trump Administration until September 5th to end the DACA program. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and officials from nine other states on Thursday urged the Trump administration to end a program that’s allowed hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants to work in the country without fear of being deported. Joey Gibson’s “Patriot Prayer” is mobilizing on September 10th a “Portland Freedom March — Entire Nation” featuring Billy Sessions, a Confederate monument defender, who has been active in violent clashes with those trying to remove these symbols of slavery and racism. The merging of the “old South” rebellion with “alt-right” white nationalism is an ominous development. Their plan is to instill fear and attack Portland’s Immigrant, Muslim, Jewish, Indigenous, Black and LGBTQ+ communities. After the rally we will be marching to the Salmon St. Fountain. We will be collaborating with Portland's Resistance and are in communication with Rose City Antifa. We are committed to community safety and protecting marginalized communities. Ours will be a disciplined and secure event. October Conference: Confronting the Far Right “Patriot” rallies are not an isolated phenomenon. Rather, they represent an emboldening of the right-wing across this country, whose rhetoric and actions have been supported by an openly racist, misogynist, bigoted administration in the White House. PSUAH plans to host a day long conference to include expert education on the white nationalist movement with extensive time for local groups and activists to integrate that learning into coherent strategies for building the Portland left as well as fighting the Right. | Sep 14 | Thu | The "Great Recession" financial crisis of 2007/8 brought forth the need for Americans to examine the financial institutions which came to negatively impact Americans, increasing the inequities of American society as well as the divide based on race. That examination begun with a critical look at the role of the too-big-to-fail banks and a desire to develop financial institutions which support the needs for local financing of local needs, separated from the profit seeking activities of the too-big-too-fail banks.
Thus a movement to form public banks was reborn. The movement today focuses on the formation of municipal banks. Movement grows coast to coast with active efforts from Seattle, San Francisco, and Santa Fe and going east to Washington DC and Philadelphia. And now the effort starts in Portland. | |||||||||

Business as usual at City Hall isn’t working for all of Portland. Change is happening too slowly. City Council has not done enough to keep housing affordable, help create living wage jobs, and make City Hall a transparent, accountable, community-led decision-making space. We must create a City Council that represents all Portlanders. My campaign is about building power with the people to create real change in our community. I will draw on my experience as a community and environmental justice organizer to make this goal a reality. Actions have to match values.
