Jane Austen might never have imagined that her 1816 novel Emma could be turned into a fresh and satirical look at ultra-rich teenagers in a Beverly Hills high school. Cher (Alicia Silverstone) and Dionne (Stacey Dash), both named after "great singers of the past that now do infomercials," are pampered upper-class girls who care less about getting good grades than wearing the right clothes and being as popular as possible. But Cher, who lives with her tough yet warm-hearted lawyer dad (Dan Hedaya) and hunky, sensitive stepbrother (Paul Rudd), also has an innate urge to help those less fortunate -- like the two introverted teachers she brings together ("negotiating" herself improved grades in the process) and new friend Tai (Brittany Murphy), who starts out a geek and ends up a Cher prodigy. Cher also possesses her own sensitive side, and she is looking for the perfect boyfriend, whom she ends up finding where she least expected.

Tonight's nonprofit recipient is Jhamtse Gatsal, a community, a school, and a home for about 90 children ranging in age from toddler to adolescent. Jhamtse Gatsal lies in the district of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, India, and the children come from nearby villages. Each of these children has a background of adversity. The driving goal of Ghamtse Gatsal is to provide these children with better lives, helping them to achieve their fullest potential.

**Milenio.org invite you to a RALLY TO SAVE DACA**

We will gather at Terry Schrunk Plaza which is across the street of the Federal Building

On July 12, 2017, news broke that John Kelly, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security deflected responsibility for the fate of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA) and Temporary Protective Status (TPS) which, combined, protect over one million people from deportation.

In a meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Kelly told Members of Congress that the fate of the DACA and TPS programs were in the hands of white nationalist Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Right wing state politicians have given the Trump Administration until September 5th to end the DACA program.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and officials from nine other states on Thursday urged the Trump administration to end a program that’s allowed hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants to work in the country without fear of being deported.

We are laser focused on working for the passage of Carbon Fee and Dividend, the climate change solution economists and climate scientists alike say is the “best first-step” to preventing the worst impacts of a warming world.

We have a solid and growing chapter with 20-30 core members who are committed to our approach. We meet twice a month, on 2nd Saturdays (national conference call) and 4th Wednesdays (Social Action Night). We'd love to meet you. Portland Stands United Against Hate will be mobilizing again to confront a white nationalist gathering in our town. We intend to draw out thousands to discourage these racists and haters.

Joey Gibson’s “Patriot Prayer” is mobilizing on September 10th a “Portland Freedom March — Entire Nation” featuring Billy Sessions, a Confederate monument defender, who has been active in violent clashes with those trying to remove these symbols of slavery and racism.

The merging of the “old South” rebellion with “alt-right” white nationalism is an ominous development. Their plan is to instill fear and attack Portland’s Immigrant, Muslim, Jewish, Indigenous, Black and LGBTQ+ communities.

After the rally we will be marching to the Salmon St. Fountain. We will be collaborating with Portland's Resistance and are in communication with Rose City Antifa. We are committed to community safety and protecting marginalized communities. Ours will be a disciplined and secure event.

October Conference: Confronting the Far Right

“Patriot” rallies are not an isolated phenomenon. Rather, they represent an emboldening of the right-wing across this country, whose rhetoric and actions have been supported by an openly racist, misogynist, bigoted administration in the White House.

PSUAH plans to host a day long conference to include expert education on the white nationalist movement with extensive time for local groups and activists to integrate that learning into coherent strategies for building the Portland left as well as fighting the Right.

Stay tuned for further details.

The "Great Recession" financial crisis of 2007/8 brought forth the need for Americans to examine the financial institutions which came to negatively impact Americans, increasing the inequities of American society as well as the divide based on race. That examination begun with a critical look at the role of the too-big-to-fail banks and a desire to develop financial institutions which support the needs for local financing of local needs, separated from the profit seeking activities of the too-big-too-fail banks.

Thus a movement to form public banks was reborn. The movement today focuses on the formation of municipal banks. Movement grows coast to coast with active efforts from Seattle, San Francisco, and Santa Fe and going east to Washington DC and Philadelphia. And now the effort starts in Portland.

Join us at Julia DeGraw for Portland City Council’s (Position 2) Campaign Kick-Off! It’s time to Democratize City Hall.

Business as usual at City Hall isn’t working for all of Portland. Change is happening too slowly. City Council has not done enough to keep housing affordable, help create living wage jobs, and make City Hall a transparent, accountable, community-led decision-making space. We must create a City Council that represents all Portlanders.

My campaign is about building power with the people to create real change in our community. I will draw on my experience as a community and environmental justice organizer to make this goal a reality.

Actions have to match values. That’s why I will not accept corporate contributions to my campaign. City politics works when it embraces the people’s voices over the interests of corporations.

HY AT 8 AM? WHY AT THE WASHING COUNTY COURTHOUSE? ICE has been targeting immigrant community members when they show up to their mandated court hearings at the Washington County Courthouse for the past couple of months. Most folks are going to plea out for DUI cases and/or enroll in a DUI diversion program. DUI Cases are scheduled for Mondays between 8-10 AM. Just this Monday, they apprehended 3 people and given that next week were the original dates for Operation Mega, we want to draw attention to ICE's predatory behavior at the courthouse.

Operation Mega is an operation of nationwide ICE raids that was set to target over 8,000 immigrants for detention and eventual deportation over a five day period starting on September 17, 2017. ICE now claims they have canceled the operation, but the fact is that thousands of immigrants are already deported every week anyway, and we need to come together as a community to say no more! The second of those rallies is coming up one week from today, Friday,
September 22 at 5 PM at Pioneer Courthouse Square, SW Yamill and Broadway.
From the listing:

September 23 marks 3 years since the US launched its first bombing
attacks in Syria, ostensibly against the Islamic State, but as shown by
the Trump administration, as a means to fight against the Syrian
government. After bombing a Syrian airfield in April and shooting down a
Syrian plane in June, the US is escalating this war. The US has troops on
the ground and makeshift airbases in a sovereign nation without their
consent or a UN mandate.

In the interim, the UN has expressed concern at the high civilian casualty
rate in Raqqa:
Heavy civilian casualties in Raqqa from air strikes: U.N. (Reuters 8/31)
www.reuters.com/article/us-mideast-crisis-syria-un-idUSKCN1BB17G

We recognize there are many other issues at play in the US today,
including the ongoing and escalating rhetoric with North Korea, the rise
of right wing protests with attendant violence (including police
violence), immigration and environmental issues. We see these all as being
connected to the wars, not in the least that ending military spending and
investing in human needs would be one way to bring resolution to those
issues.

Join us to protest the Freedom Foundation’s fundraiser at the Sheraton Portland Airport Hotel. The event features Andy Puzder, the former fast food CEO who was nominated for Secretary of Labor, but was too extreme for either party in the U.S. Senate to stomach. Puzder withdrew his nomination after his anti-worker record and a video of his ex-wife making domestic abuse allegations became public. As the head of CKE Restaurants, which owns Hardee's and Carl's Jr., Puzder called his employees "the best of the worst," and workers have filed 22 complaints of wage theft and four sexual harassment claims.

Let’s show the Freedom Foundation and Andy Puzder that Oregon is a state with zero tolerance for bigotry, devaluing workers or domestic violence.

The Trump administration's war on working people has emboldened the far right, leading to a rise in violent attacks by extremists and open rallies by the alt-right and the KKK in Berkeley, Portland, and Charlottesville. Democratic politicians have failed to pose a real alternative to Trump and the right, instead saying we need to hold back on demands that would alleviate the immiseration facing working people, like taxing the rich, single-payer healthcare, and a living wage.

At the same time, the opportunities to build the left and socialist organization are the best they've been in decades. We need to mobilize a mass movement to defeat the far right on the streets. And we must construct a left political alternative that raises people's hopes and builds solidarity against the right's attempt to scapegoat the poor, minorities, women, immigrants, and people of color for rising inequality and social despair.

Socialism - the politics of a democratic working class movement from below - is the revolutionary answer to right-wing populism and neoliberal centrism. Socialist organization must be a central component of this new left if we are to effectively challenge Trump and the far right and build a better future.

Join us for this vital discussion!

Known as the “Bernie Sanders of Wyoming,” Charlie Hardy was a Catholic priest who spent eight years living in a cardboard shack in Venezuela before returning to his home state of Wyoming to run for the US Senate on a platform of getting money out of politics. Charlie vs Goliath (www.charlievsgoliath.com) looks at the issue of money in politics through the eyes of a candidate who has refused to take contributions from special interests.

Charlie vs Goliath has profound relevance in this unprecedented, “Trumpian” era of US politics. At its heart, the documentary is a story about the power of hope even when all seems lost and the importance of optimism no matter how bleak the circumstances. The film will be screened across the country in collaboration with grassroots groups fighting for radical political change in the lead-up to the November 2017 elections.

The event is sponsored by the North West Film Center and both the film’s protagonist, former US Senate Candidate Charlie Hardy, and the film’s director, award-winning journalist and filmmaker, Reed Lindsay, will be in attendance and participating in a post-screening Q&A. Stop the Deception - End The Wars!

Making Sense of the War on Terror

The government and media have misled us about 9/11 in order to compel public opinion to support the "War on Terror" , the longest most expensive war in American History.

Why have we gone along with it? Do we accept endless war as normal? Are we numb to the suffering caused by our military interventions?

No we have simply been propagandized into submission. We have been deceived into thinking that the War on Terror is a good thing, a valiant struggle against
terrorists who intend to attack us as we were on 9/11.

Behind the War on Terror is a strategic plan crafted decades in advance to redraw the map of the Middle East. 9/11 was a false flag operation blamed on Muslims in order to start the military operations for that strategic plan. Recognizing the origin of the plan is crucial to understanding the deception that has changed our world.

Christopher Bollyn is the author of "Solving 9-11: The Deception that Changed the World" and "Solving 9-11: The Original Articles". As a journalist with a weekly newspaper based in Washington DC he has, from the beginning, investigated the events of September 11, 2001, and questioned the official narrative. He soon realized that the government and mainstream media were colluding to deceive the public about the terror attacks in order to take the nation into an open-ended war in the Middle East. His research proves that 9/11 was the keystone of a strategic plan to launch the War on Terror.
