From January to June, when the 2019 Oregon Legislature is in session, many Action Nights will be centered upon what's happening in the Capitol, with opportunities to hear direct reports from our Conservation Director and Lobbyist, and hold our elected officials accountable to the people who got them elected. Action Nights will be all about praxis: we'll be learning and growing our organizing skills, then we'll immediately put our new skills to use around a current issue happening in the session. | ||

Western Oregon's Willamette Basin, once a vast wilderness, became a thriving community almost overnight. When Oregon territory was opened for homesteading in the early 1800s, most of the intrepid pioneers settled in the valley, spurring rapid changes in the landscape. Heralded as fertile with a mild climate and an abundance of natural resources, the valley enticed farmers, miners, and loggers, who were quickly followed by the construction of rail lines and roads. Dams were built to harness the once free-flowing Willamette River and provide power to the growing population. As cities rose, people like Portland architect Edward Bennett and conservationist governor Tom McCall worked to contain urban sprawl. In An Environmental History of the Willamette Valley (History Press), authors Elizabeth and William Orr bring to life the changes that sculpted Oregon's beloved Willamette Valley. | |||

In 2016 the community tried to participate in the contract process and was forcibly thrown out of City Hall. Under this contract, cops routinely harass members of the houseless community, people experiencing mental health crises, and communities of color at disproportionate rates with no consequences. After years of being told that real accountability for violent and racist police officers is not possible because the city's "hands are tied by the contract," now is the time for our community to come together and demand that the city create a fair contract that works for all Portlanders.
We can NOT endure another four years of this! Join us on Thursday July 11th across from City Hall on SW 4th Ave to demand that Mayor Wheeler and City Council enforce real transparency and accountability for the Portland Police. |

Lights for Liberty will shine a light on the horrific abuses of the Trump administration, bringing thousands of Americans across the country to protest the inhumane conditions faced by refugees. At 9pm local time, at every detention camp, ICE Facility, and in cities, towns, and homes around America, a silent sea of candles will light up the nation. Throughout that time, many of us have been urging the City Council to—at the very least!—hold a public forum to inform our community about this dangerous project. Just yesterday, the City announced that this long-awaited forum will occur this coming Monday, July 15. This is the moment we have been waiting for. We need you to join us, Friend, to make our collective voices loud and clear: no tar sands in Portland, or anywhere. P.S. — Here's some background on Zenith Energy: In December 2017, Zenith Energy bought an old asphalt and crude oil terminal located in NW Portland. Within months of purchasing the terminal, Zenith Energy began importing tar sands crude oil by rail from Canada, storing the oil at the terminal in NW Portland, and loading it onto tankers with destinations including China, South Korea, and California. Not only is Zenith using old infrastructure permitted to transport asphalt in order to move tar sands crude oil through Portland, they are using permits filed by the terminals former owner in 2014 to expand the facility. If new construction is completed, Zenith will achieve a four-fold increase in railcar unloading capability, potentially increasing the number of oil trains passing through Portland each week. Tar sands is known as the most polluting form of energy on the planet. By allowing Zenith's expansion to occur, not only is the City complicit in the burning of this dirty, polluting fuel and exacerbating the climate crisis, but they are putting our communities at direct risk of a possible train derailment.
